Safety and convenience with same-day ambulatory surgery

Same-day surgery allows patients to have sophisticated medical procedures, and then recuperate in their own homes. Highly trained surgeons perform the procedures, using the newest medical techniques in a safe, comfortable and caring environment.

When ambulatory surgery is scheduled, pre-surgical x-rays, EKGs and other tests are arranged through the Medical Center's Pre-Surgical Testing Department in advance of the actual procedure. On the day of surgery, patients are admitted to allow ample time to recover from anesthesia under the care of an experienced registered nurse.

Following the procedure, the patient is carefully monitored until it is determined he or she is alert, able to walk, and meets other medical criteria. This usually occurs within an hour or two of the completion of the procedure, depending on the specific condition.

An adult must accompany all ambulatory surgery patients home on discharge from the unit. Friends and relatives are comfortably accommodated in the Medical Center's main lobby while waiting for the patient.
