Peconic Bay Medical Center announces $5 Million cornerstone gift to its
Cardiac Care Program

(RIVERHEAD, NY – June 28, 2016) Peconic Bay Medical Center announced the John and Elaine Kanas Family Foundation’s $5,000,000 gift to its Cardiac Care Program at the hospital’s Golf Classic at Sebonack Golf Club on June 27. This gift is among the largest in the hospital’s history.

This gift will help Peconic Bay Medical Center to establish the first comprehensive cardiac program on eastern Long Island – whose seasonal population doubles during warmer months.   Currently, residents and visitors experiencing cardiac emergencies must travel a significant distance for care when needed.

“Establishing a comprehensive cardiac program is a game changer for our region,” noted Mr. Kanas. “During a heart attack, time is life. If cardiac care can be performed here in a timely way, we will save lives and strengthen the communities we serve.”

Mr. and Mrs. Kanas are active members of the eastern Long Island community and generous benefactors to Peconic Bay Medical Center. In 2009, the Kanases helped to establish the Kanas Center for Advanced Surgery, which created state-of-the-art operating facilities that are considered among the best in Suffolk County.

“We have to continue to move forward, and the Kanases’ gift sets the tone for community support around the Cardiac Care Program as well as other programs that Peconic Bay Medical Center and Northwell Health will establish together,” said Emilie Roy Corey, the Chair of the Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors.

The Cardiac Care Program is part of a larger $60 million project to build a new critical care tower at Peconic Bay. The tower will be a significant, two-story expansion of the existing emergency department and will house the Cardiac Care Program. The Cardiac Care Program will include two state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs, an electrophysiology suite, recovery rooms and an 18-bed intensive care unit/cardiac care unit. In addition, the hospital is working to be the first trauma center on eastern Long Island that is accredited by the American College of Surgeons, the gold standard for all trauma centers. The critical care tower is a cornerstone of the hospital’s partnership with Northwell Health, formerly known as the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Peconic Bay Medical Center officially joined Northwell Health earlier this year.

“We are deeply grateful to John and Elaine for their tremendous generosity,” said Andrew J. Mitchell, President & CEO of Peconic Medical Center. “Together with Northwell Health, we are creating a world-class medical center on the east end [of Long Island]. We can offer a full range of advanced services to the community that it so desperately needs.”

“Northwell Health is committed to investing in Peconic Bay’s future by further strengthening its clinical services and building a network of outpatient facilities that will establish Peconic Bay as a regional destination for top-flight medical care,” said Michael Dowling, President & CEO of Northwell Health. “By anchoring Northwell Health’s eastern region, Peconic Bay Medical Center will significantly enhance the health system’s ability to meet the current and future health needs of full-and part-time residents for central and eastern Long Island. Having the support of John and Elaine Kanas will help us get there, and we are truly grateful.”
