RIVERHEAD, NY – National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has wrapped up for October 2015. The month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease. Peconic Bay Medical Center supports Breast Cancer Awareness by participating as well as being the beneficiary in the LI2Day walk, the event Pink Strands for Hope, as well as the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale where proceeds benefit research for breast cancer through the Susan G Komen Foundation.
In conclusion of October’s events, Peconic Bay Medical Center held an event to raise awareness about screening and early detection by hearing a survivor’s touching story first hand. When cancer survivor Anne Regina Guidi found a lump in her breast she was terrified and frightened. Without health insurance she didn’t know where to turn. She called the Cancer Services Program of Suffolk County at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was immediately enrolled in The Cancer Services/Patient Navigation Program and had appointments already scheduled for a clinical breast exam, mammogram and sonogram. Not only did the Cancer Services Program enroll Anne in the emergency Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program, they navigated her through her entire battle of fighting cancer. From detection to diagnosis, to treatment, the Cancer Services Program was with Anne each step of the way.
Anne Regina Guidi recently celebrated her one year post operative date on October 6, 2015. When Anne shared her moving story, she highlighted how a team member from the Cancer Services Program of Suffolk County sat on her bed while she went for her first biopsy. She shared that she felt supported and loved by who then was considered a stranger and now a friend. “The services offered by Peconic Bay Medical Center’s Cancer Services Program of Suffolk County is what saved my life.”
The Cancer Services Program offers free cancer screenings for uninsured residents of Suffolk County who meet eligibility requirements. The program offers breast cancer screenings, colorectal cancer screenings and cervical cancer screenings. The Cancer Services Program of Suffolk County aims to decrease rates of cancer and cancer mortality for uninsured people of Long Island. Their mission is to provide breast, cervical and colorectal cancer education, screening and treatment services with compassion and respect for uninsured people of Suffolk County.
