Family Medicine Departmental Electives & Tracks for Residents As a resident in The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Department of Family Medicine, you have the opportunity to participate in a myriad of electives from either your local site or within the department as a whole. If you have a special interest in a rotation that is not offered, we may be able to work with you to create a specialized elective, which may be converted into a track. We are always exploring innovative methods to train future family physicians and have enormous opportunities for those seeking employment upon graduation. These rotations are accessible to residents from each of our four family medicine residency programs: Glen Cove, Peconic Bay, Phelps, and Plainview. Global Health Opportunities for networking, international mission trips (i.e., Guyana, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Kenya, and Nigeria) and locally (U.S based). Webinars and symposiums on relevant topics in global & planetary health and professional development. Urgent Care Northwell Health has 56+ urgent care sites through our partnership with Go Health Urgent Care. Residents are teamed with Family Medicine physicians who coordinate the clinical care at these sites, learning both the clinical and business aspect of this new field of medicine. Immersive hands-on experience in the field of urgent care provides exposure to procedural training (i.e., splinting, I&D, laceration repair, foreign body removal, EKG and X-ray interpretation, etc.) and training in the diagnoses and management of both acute emergent and non-emergent illnesses in the outpatient setting. Quality, Leadership, & Advocacy Become involved in learning the essentials of quality, leadership and advocacy based on work completed in collaboration with Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM). Residents engage in live experiences with leadership within Northwell Health, learning to apply skills learned in didactic sessions. Participation in regional meetings and lobbying with our state and national professional societies are included. WomenÕs Health For advanced training in obstetrics and gynecology, this elective allows for live experiences in fetal- maternal health, colposcopy, Advanced Life Support Obstetrics (ALSO), provider & instructor training, and much more. Clinical Informatics Northwell offers the opportunity to work alongside informaticists and other clinical digital experts in ambulatory, inpatient, and other environments as they manage various initiatives in health information technology. In addition, an opportunity to engage with the American Medical Informatics Association is also provided. Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) The Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) elective enables residents to become proficient with routine ultrasound applications as specified by ACGME requirements. Residents will gain an understanding of both indications and limitations of POCUS in clinical practice. At the completion of the rotation, residents will be expected to demonstrate competency in basic ultrasound (ultrasonography of carotid, thyroid, heart, aorta, abdomen, urinary tract, DVT screening, and joint and venous access, interpret basic ultrasonography of carotid, thyroid, heart, aorta, abdomen, urinary tract, DVT screening, and joint and venous access, perform and interpret eFAST Exams), image generation, interpretation, and apply these principles of ultrasonography to clinical settings. Research & Scholarly Activity Residents are mentored by research professional investigators, members of the Institutional Review Board Committee, and other scholarly trained clinicians. Elective Structure ¥ Residents apply for 2-4 week elective rotations and are accepted pending their program directors permission. ¥ Elective allows residents to sample various subjects outside of their home program electives with the option to convert to a 12 week track. Track Structure ¥ Residents apply to participate in 2-4 week rotations which can be combined into 12 weeks training in a particular area over their PGY 2&3 years. ¥ Upon graduation residents receive a certificate for completion of the designated elective or track experience. ¥ Comprised of online modules, live experiences, conference attendance and culminating with a regional/national presentation/publication. Electives & Tracks Family Medicine Telemedicine Northwell has a state-of-the-art telemedicine program that serves our patients in the full spectrum of patient care areas from Emergency Telehealth Services (NETS), Acute care-E-ICU, Tele-stroke, Tele-psych, hospitalist, and many ambulatory settings. Residents gain hands-on experience and learn amongst seasoned telemedicine faculty, while working remotely for most of the two-week rotation. Sports Medicine Participate in both sports medicine and non-surgical orthopedics rotations, including medical coverage of various sporting events. Residents have access to an exceptional Family Medicine Sports Medicine curriculum. Hospital Medicine Exposure to hospital medicine training in our teaching hospitals. Residents interested in expanding their skills and training in hospitals of their choice while pursuing this elective can have the opportunity if available. Residents complete modules through the Society of Hospital Medicine and attend local and national Hospital Medicine conferences. Our HM elective offers real time learning in high acuity provision of care. Behavioral Health Exposure to advanced training in Behavioral Health with a professional psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, and mental health counselor in a primary care practice. In addition, participants will gain experience amongst system professionals, such as a case manager, community partners, etc. Urology Residents rotate in both inpatient and ambulatory urology settings with board certified FM and Urology physicians. Exposure to procedural skills, including Foley placement/exchange, cystoscopy, prostate biopsy, vasectomy, bladder instillations. Urology Video Series Curriculum inclusive of topics in general urology, nephrolithiasis, andrology and sexual health void, dysfunction, pelvic pain and urologic oncology to name a few. Human Trafficking Education, Advocacy, and Response & Training (HEART) Learn from experts in the anti-trafficking world through via rotations and online modules. Residents will present at a local, national, or global venue and participate in advocacy work. Interact and collaborate with healthcare providers, lawyers, law enforcement, politicians, professors, community- based organizations, and survivors of human trafficking. LGBTQIA+ Collaborative educational experience with the LGBTQIA community including attending LGBTH journal clubs, completing an interactive LGBTH curriculum series, and engaging in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) with an assigned faculty mentor. The curriculum features essential experiences that help our residents address the health disparities affecting these communities. They will learn methods to both minimize barriers to care and maximize care opportunities. How to work with non-profits and advocacy organizations who are trying to decrease health disparities in these communities and gain a better understanding of the community resources available to patients. Lifestyle Medicine Explore and study how evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches are being utilized to treat, reverse, and prevent chronic illnesses. Curriculum includes integrating whole food plant-based diet, regular physical activity, adequate quality sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and pursuing other non-drug modalities into their practices. Obesity Medicine Understand the Chronic Disease of Obesity, in addition to epidemiology, nutrition therapy, pharmacotherapy, Adolescent Obesity, Obesity Treatment Strategies, etc. Residents train with an assigned Obesity Medicine attending or fellow and attend at least one regional or national Obesity Medicine Conference throughout the program. Participants will gain immense knowledge in practice management and starting an Obesity medicine Practice. Rural Medicine Work closely with a family physician in a rural practice and to learn about the challenges faced by physicians who work in a setting that is geographically distant from tertiary care and experiences an undersupply of primary care. The course integrates meaningful community service with discussions of small-town practice. Residents develop skills in teaching and mentorship, clinical reasoning and advocacy through case discussion and immersion opportunities. Hospice & Palliative Medicine/House Calls NorthwellÕs House Calls program is a national leader in providing home-based primary care to medically complex seniors, with quality outcomes recognized by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS). Residents will participate in 1:1 rotations with our board-certified House Calls Physicians, trained in FM/IM and Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Exposure includes: home-based primary care and end-of-life care (including procedural skills), working with an interdisciplinary team for acute and chronic issues, CAPC and AAFP HPM communication curricula, opportunities for research and presentations at the AAHCM conference and much more. Family Medicine Fellowships for Family Medicine Graduates OtolaryngologyThis one-year fellowship is designed for residents graduating from an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited family medicine program with an interest in otolaryngology. Twelve months will be devoted to six core areas of otolaryngology in an office- and hospital-based setting with competencies in both clinical evaluations and relevant procedures.UrologyThere is a tremendous demand for urologic care among the aging U.S. populationÑbut a shortage of urologists, and therefore limited access to care. This 18-month fellowship in genitourinary (GU) medicine focuses on office-based, ambulatory aspects in order to expand access and quality of care. Our family medicine and urology programs have a national reputation for excellence, innovation and dedication to the success of our trainees.
