A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is trained to diagnose and treat physical as well as mental and cognitive conditions. There are a range of specialty areas within the field of psychiatry, including:

  • Adult Psychiatry: Working with adults experiencing mental illness or psychological distress.
  • Adolescent and child psychiatry: Working with children and teens.
  • Addiction psychiatry: Working with people suffering from addiction and substance abuse issues.
  • Forensic psychiatry: Working in the courts and criminal justice system.
  • Geriatric psychiatry: Working with elderly populations.
  • Neuropsychiatry: Treating mental disorders associated with nervous system problems, brain diseases and brain injuries.
  • Organizational psychiatry: Specializing in workplace and organizational settings.

A Psychiatrist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental, addictive and emotional disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance-related disorders, sexual and gender identity disorders and adjustment disorders.

The Psychiatrist is able to understand the biologic, psychologic and social components of illness, and therefore is uniquely prepared to treat the whole person. A Psychiatrist is qualified to order diagnostic laboratory tests and to prescribe medications, evaluate and treat psychologic and interpersonal problems, and to intervene with families who are coping with stress, crises and other problems in living.
