RIVERHEAD, NY – During the month of April, a coalition of local organizations has donated a combined $23,000 to assist with establishing specialized fitness equipment and curricula at three East End elementary schools. Through a partnership with Peconic Bay Medical Center; GymGuyz East End, the Mattituck Lions Club and Kait’s Angels will help bring Project Fit America to the Greenport and Cutchogue East Elementary schools as well as the Riverhead Charter School.

Project Fit America is a national non-profit that provides schools with the fitness equipment, curriculum and guidance needed to reduce the onset of childhood obesity and diabetes. In 2013 Project Fit America launched in all five public elementary schools in Riverhead, the first program in New York State. The Riverhead program has been tremendously successfully, helping the school district to win the inaugural Suffolk County Community Health Improvement Award in 2014.

The goal of Project Fit America is to create new and sustainable opportunities for kids to be active, fit and healthy as part of the everyday school experience. This aim is accomplished through educational programs and permanent equipment, that will allow students to successfully teach fitness education year after year, empowering hundreds of kids to be fit and make healthy living decisions.

Kait’s Angels and Mattituck Lions Club helped make this possible by their generous donations to provide the necessary equipment through Project Fit America at Cutchogue East Elementary and Greenport Elementary Schools. “We are excited to help fund Project Fit America and bring this program to the kids of our community,” said Tim Bialeski immediate Past President of the Mattituck Loins Club, which donated $15,000.  The Friends of the Mattituck Lions Club , a 501(c)3 that supports the mission of the Mattituck Lions Club, and Kait’s Angels also donated $5,000 to go toward the project.,

“Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up active, fit and healthy. This project will impact hundreds of kids for years and years,” said Dayna Corlito, Owner and Operator of GymGuyz East End. Dayna has continued to help raise funds to bring Project Fit America to the Riverhead Charter School.

Further support to bring Project Fit America to these elementary schools can be mailed to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Checks can made payable to PBMC Foundation and donations can be mailed to 1 Heroes Way (Formerly 1300 Roanoke Avenue) Riverhead, NY 11901.
