Riverhead Charter School Physical Education Teacher Wins National Award Presented by Peconic Bay Medical Center

ba1872dd532b4a3315a3bf6b625396b3_f19952.jpgRIVERHEAD, NY – Peconic Bay Medical Center collaborated with Project Fit America (PFA) to bring an innovative fitness education program to Long Island. In 2013, we became a sponsor hospital to award this grant to five elementary schools in the Riverhead Central School District, who were the first schools in New York State to receive the PFA grant, and then continued to expand this program to additional school districts on the East End of Long Island. To date, we have awarded this grant to nine elementary schools, one of whom is Riverhead Charter School. The PFA program represents our commitment to schools, children and their families along with a focus on preventative measures that we can invest to keep our community healthy. “Project Fit America is an innovative way we use to serve our community’s youngest members,” said Andrew Mitchell, president and CEO of Peconic Bay Medical Center. “To Peconic Bay Medical Center, health care is more than just treating sickness; we want to give our community the tools they need to stay fit and healthy.”

PFA Trainers who work on site at schools nominate teachers they find excelling exceptionally well in project development. The nominated teachers are invited to submit their lesson plans, teaching philosophies and how they are using the PFA program at the end of the year. Key factors and evidence are strongly scrutinized. To be awarded the honor of National All Star Teacher we look for the following key indicators:

  • The culture of the PE program has created a high social interactive development as evidenced by the students. They show knowledge and comprehension of key terms, phrases, and philosophies that include team friendly, teamwork, cooperation, communication, the building blocks of fitness and leadership skills. All these skills taught by the PE Teacher and embedded into the culture of their program.
  • Several to many key Chart & Challenges Fitness Activities are progressively implemented with excellent student participation.
  • Broad-based Fitness Programming has been developed into the core of their PE Program: This includes strength upper body, lower and abdominal, cardiovascular, flexibility, coordination as well as positive social skills.
  • Strong and consistent utilization of the PFA Core Manual lessons in conjunction with indoor and outdoor equipment.
  • Exceptional dedication to the kids.
  • Outstanding creativity in PFA program usage.
  • Excellent rapport with other faculty, principal and parents.

Over the past 29 years PFA has been established in over 1,000 schools in 300 cities and 45 states. To date, only 82 other PE Teachers have ever been given this award, and Robert is one of three teachers to receive the award this year.

Robert Cook stands out as head of the class. He has the spirit, energy, dedication, commitment and passion that has earned him the status of National All Star. He is an outstanding role model for his Project Fit America peer teachers and the physical education profession. We look forward to shining a national spotlight on him through this award and to sharing with all of our PFA schools, across the country, the outstanding PFA Program he has created and continues to progress.
