With less outdoor activities and the holidays of winter and fall, people tend to put on more weight. If you’re on a diet during the fall and winter, here’s some tips on how to do it right.

The Don’ts

Follow these tips and avoid the average weight gain of five to seven pounds in the winter. Never go to a party hungry. Curb your desire for empty party-food calories and fill up on high fiber fruits and veggies before the party..Alcohol is packed with calories, and libations are popular due to the holiday season with all its parties and social gatherings. Don’t overdo it. Alcohol slows your metabolic system and keeps your body from burning fat. Lastly, don’t sit indoors to stay warm and cozy. Develop a regular exercise routine and stick to it. Whether it’s a jog at the park, walk around the block or at the gym, get moving to burn those calories. Even if you’re on a good diet, if you overeat, consume too much alcohol or become a couch potato, it’s just not going to be effective.

The Do’s

Give yourself some leeway and understanding for mistakes. After all, you're only human. If you fall off the wagon and overeat, make up for it with some extra exercise or cutting down calories the next day. At work, do take the stairs instead of the elevator and take a brisk walk after your lunch break. The bottom line is you need to practice controlling your calories and take measures to avoid overeating.

Winter weight gain is largely due to reduced exercise, increased eating and the act of hibernation. It can be a tough time of year for dieters. The cold weather can make you want to reach for comfort foods like mac and cheese and interrupt your workout routine. Follow these do’s and don’ts and ward off those pounds during the fall and winter seasons.
