The old saying is “you are what you eat.” While that may or may not always be true, what is certain is that eating healthy foods keeps you healthy. Did you realize that by choosing the right foods you can help prevent vision loss or perhaps even improve your vision? We’ve put together five foods you should be eating to improve your eye health.

Best Foods for Healthy Vision

Leafy Greens, the Darker the Better – Dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, and Swiss chard are an incredible source of lutein and zeaxanthin. Other green vegetables are good sources too, though these are the best. These substances are linked to a lower risk of cataracts and advanced macular degeneration. That’s inspiration to eat your greens!

  • Egg Yolks – Another source of lutein and zeaxanthin are egg yolks. Also, egg yolks are a healthy source of fat and protein, both of which are necessary to keep your eyes and your body healthy. Scramble an egg for breakfast and make this a regular part of your diet, assuming your doctor feels it is okay considering your overall diet.
  • Omega-3 Rich Fish – Salmon, is the go-to, but there are other options too. Omega-3 fats can improve your health in many ways, including helping you stay heart healthy, but for your eyes, it can help prevent many age-related ailments. If you can't eat enough fish, consider a fish oil supplement.
  • Black Currant – Black currant contains extremely high levels of anthocyanins. This nutrient keeps your eyes healthy and may help in the prevention of cataracts. Black currant is also rich in essential fatty acids.
  • Orange Pepper – While you may generally reach for the green or red pepper when cooking, you should think about picking up an orange pepper next time you go shopping. Of all fruits and vegetables tested, orange pepper has the highest levels of zeaxanthin. This is a substance that your body doesn’t make on its own but can improve eye health.
