Top Healthy Aging Tips for Women

May 27, 2019

The cycle of life from birth to death is a journey everyone must take. You might not like to think about getting old, but if you live long enough, it’s inevitable. So why not do it the right way? A big part of aging well includes good habits, such as what you eat, how you manage any health conditions, and exercise to keep your muscles and heart strong. Having regular checkups at medical health centers is essential for monitoring any health conditions you might have.

1. Eat Well

Good nutrition is essential for a healthy body and mind, especially for the very young and the elderly. Wise food choices can make the difference between feeling tired all the time and feeling ready to hit the golf course, or swim a few laps at the community pool. Read labels and avoid things like high sodium, trans fats, and high fructose corn syrup, to name a few. Eat whole grains, high-fiber fruits and vegetables, and smaller portions. Be sure certain foods don’t affect any medications you take.

2. Take Your Medication

As you get older and some of your organs don’t work quite like they used to, you might be prescribed medications to manage your health conditions. Type II Diabetes and high blood pressure are common conditions among the elderly. You should take medications as prescribed, but also keep track of your vital numbers at home. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor at the medical center questions about your medications, or tell him any side-affects you might be experiencing when you take them. Take medications correctly, and don’t adjust the dosage on your own. Store medications properly to keep them out of the wrong hands, and properly dispose of old drugs you no longer take. Talk to your pharmacist about mixing over-the-counter supplements with your prescription drugs.

3. Exercise

Professionals at medical care centers know that staying active helps keep the body and mind in good shape. You don’t have to perform structured exercise routines. Things like walking, dancing, gardening, swimming, water aerobics, yoga, and Tai chi can give you a greater sense of wellbeing and improve your agility, your mental health, and your ability to sleep well.

4. Socialize

Staying active and being around good friends helps lift your spirits and reduce stress. People who suffer from loneliness are more apt to suffer health-related conditions, including a higher risk for dementia.

5. Remove Fall Risks

The risk of falling increases as you get older. Exercise will improve balance and muscle strength, but plan ahead and remove loose rugs from your home. Install handrails in tubs and showers. Make sure there is adequate lighting at night if you get up for a snack or to use the bathroom.

6. Sleep

The body heals and repairs itself during sleep. Sleep is when energy is restored for the next day. Don’t watch TV in bed. Your room should be dark, quiet, and cool. Still can’t sleep? Try playing some soft relaxing music, or go into another room and read for a while until you feel like you can sleep.

7. Go to the Doctor
