RIVERHEAD, NY – Northwell Health Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation (PBMC) announced today that it has received a $1 million donation towards the center’s emergency department (ED) services. The generous donation, made possible through the Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation, comes from retired obstetrician/gynecologist and philanthropist, Dr. Stanley Zinberg, who has championed much of the work being conducted at PBMC. This donation will be put towards a dedicated space for critical care and trauma needs within the ED, as the first step in the impending phased expansion and renovation of the existing emergency department.

Dr. Stanley Zinberg’s amazing donation will transform emergency medical care on the East End, and will further improve the quality of care we offer to thousands of patients every year,” said Lincoln Cox, MD, Chief of Emergency Medicine at PBMC. “Everyone in the emergency department is grateful for this generous gift as we begin the planning for the expansion of the emergency department and create the Zinberg Family Critical Care & Trauma Unit.

The emergency department expansion will add new state-of-the-art treatment areas, including the Zinberg Family Critical Care & Trauma Unit, which can accommodate multiple patients simultaneously in its trauma resuscitation room. The expansion will ultimately increase overall capacity and will include specialized areas to treat patients based on acuity and streamline operations to improve throughput for treat-and-release patients.

The Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation is very pleased to acknowledge Dr. Zinberg’s generosity of the $1 million donation for the expansion of our emergency department services,” said Emilie Roy Corey, Chair of Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation. “Dr. Zinberg realizes the importance of the highest quality of emergency medical care for our community, and for that we are grateful.

Currently, PBMC provides access to emergency services including life-saving trauma, stroke and cardiac services to over 250,000 Eastern Suffolk County residents. Fully integrated with the vast resources of the Northwell Health system, the center also includes immediate access to advanced life-saving capabilities, including onsite emergency ultrasound and radiology services, the Kanas Regional Heart Center, a Level III Trauma Center, a NYS-Designated Stroke Center and SkyHealth Emergency Helicopter services.

The demand for emergency room services is on the rise, as emergency departments are essential to saving lives. Having exceptional ER services is the most important part of hospital care,” said Dr. Zinberg. “I have always recognized just how important Peconic Bay Medical Center is to Suffolk County, and I hope my donation helps to make their exceptional care even better.

Dr. Zinberg’s generous donation was part of his ongoing philanthropic mission to expand access to healthcare for the most vulnerable members of the Long Island community. Dr. Zinberg, in addition to his appointments on the Board of PBMC and the PBMC Foundation, is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, the New York Gynecological Society, and the American College of Physician Executives. He is a past president of the New York Obstetrical Society and the Bellevue Obstetrics and Gynecology Society. His achievements and philanthropic work continue to transform health services all across Long Island.

With his gift, Dr. Zinberg is leading the way throughout communities across Long Island to address the importance of emergency room services, especially now during an upswing in COVID-19 cases,” said Mary Jo Stark, Director of Nursing, Emergency Medicine and Trauma at PBMC. “This ED expansion will dramatically increase the level of patient care for not only the emergency department, but for our center as a whole. The East End of Long Island is seeing a dramatic population increase in residents from areas like NYC, so Peconic Bay Medical Center’s ED expansion couldn't have come at a better time. The center hopes to grow its services in every department while they continue to treat more and more patients every single year.
