Riverhead, NY--Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC), a leading provider of advanced healthcare services on Long Island’s East End, is now offering Focal One Robotic High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for eligible prostate cancer patients. This non-invasive, outpatient procedure allows for the precise ablation of cancerous tissue while preserving surrounding healthy tissue, eliminating the need for surgery, radiation, or incisions.
“Offering this cutting-edge treatment option to those across Eastern Suffolk County who are facing a prostate cancer diagnosis reinforces our commitment to providing advanced, patient-centered care close to home,” said Amy Loeb, EdD, MBA, RN, PBMC executive director. “Focal One Robotic HIFU gives our patients a safer, more targeted option, minimizing side effects and helping our patients maintain their quality of life. Being a community hospital, we are dedicated to our obligation of continuing to invest in new technologies and services to raise the bar for healthcare in the region. This community deserves and expects extraordinary care.”
According to the New York State Department of Health, each year almost 15,500 New Yorkers are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1,700 die of the disease. Focal One Robotic HIFU is designed for patients in the low to intermediate risk category. The procedure uses high-intensity ultrasound waves to heat and destroy cancerous cells in the prostate with pinpoint accuracy. It typically requires only one session under general anesthesia, with a low risk of complications such as incontinence or erectile dysfunction. Patients return home the same day and are often back to work or leisure activities within days.
This advanced technology further strengthens PBMC’s position as the East End’s destination for high-quality, minimally invasive cancer care. With the introduction of HIFU, patients no longer need to travel west to access one of the most promising innovations in prostate cancer treatment. Expert urologic oncologist Dr. Ragheed Saoud now offers the newly introduced HIFU procedure for patients with clinically localized prostate cancer who are suitable candidates. Interested patients will undergo screening and evaluation by Dr. Saoud at his office in Riverhead.
