Riverhead, NY—Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) has been recognized as the most socially responsible hospital in New York State by The Lown Institute Hospital Index. The prestigious honor was made as part of the organization’s annual list of the top hospitals in the United States based on an index that measures equity, value and patient outcomes of more than 2,700 hospitals nationwide. In addition to being ranked the number one hospital in New York State for social responsibility, PBMC was named to Lown’s 2024-25 Honor roll and earned “A” grades in ten other categories.
The Lown Institute evaluates hospitals’ social responsibility scores using more than 50 measures that involves inclusivity, pay equity, community benefit, avoiding overuse, cost efficiency clinical outcomes patient satisfaction and patient safety. Part of the evaluation criteria included a 30-day readmission rates, access to healthcare and the overall benefits the hospital provides the community. This is the fifth year the Lown Institute has produced its top US hospitals list, which is intended to capture metrics that hospitals are not financially incentivized to offer, such as charity care and racial or economic inclusivity efforts.

Receiving the highest ranking in New York State from the Lown Institute comes on the heels of PBMC being named a National Leader in LGBTQ+ inclusiveness by the Human Rights Campaign, earning three consecutive ‘A’ safety ratings from Leapfrog, and receiving several awards of excellence from Healthgrades and other rating agencies.
