RIVERHEAD, NY – Northwell Health’s Peconic Bay Medical Center received prestigious Five-Star ratings in multiple medical and surgical services as well as recognition for excellence in total joint replacement surgery according to the Healthgrades 2020 Report to the Nation, an annual national report from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

The report cited Peconic Bay Medical Center for five-star distinction—Healthgrades’ highest rating—in Total Knee Replacement, Hip Replacement, Bariatric Surgery, Gallbladder Removal Surgery, and Treatment of Stroke. It was the second consecutive year of Five-Star recognition for the Medical Center’s Bariatric surgery services (2019-2020), and the third consecutive year of recognition for its gallbladder removal surgery services (2018-2020). Earlier this year, Peconic Bay Medical Center was also recognized for the 2019 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™.

The Healthgrades 2020 Report also cited Peconic Bay Medical Center for a Joint Replacement Excellence Award, which recognized the Riverhead-based healthcare services continuum as among the top 10 percent in the nation for joint replacement surgery. Peconic Bay Medical Center has also been awarded the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for total knee joint replacement and total hip joint replacement.

“These awards are a testament to the quality of entire patient-care team and an affirmation of the confidence the members of the community have placed in us,” said Andrew J. Mitchell, President and CEO of Peconic Bay Medical Center. We are extremely proud to be a top 10%, nationally recognized leader in joint replacement and  the top choice for Long Island residents for orthopedic surgery, part of PBMC’s renowned Kanas Center for Advanced Surgery. As we evolve into the regional medical center for the East End, we are equally excited about the opening in January of the state-of-the-art Corey Critical Care Pavilion supporting the most advanced cardiac, stroke, and trauma care on the East End."

“The hospitals that stand out for exceptional performance in joint replacement should be commended for their long-standing commitment to quality,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “As consumers are increasingly savvy when it comes to finding and selecting a hospital, patients can be confident when they select a hospital that has achieved this Healthgrades recognition.”

The East End’s largest hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center provides closest-resource access to life-saving stroke, trauma, and interventional cardiac services for 250,000 residents of central and eastern Suffolk County. According to Mitchell, the Medical Center is about to open its newly constructed Corey Critical Care Pavilion, which will extend the Medical Center’s emergency and trauma services capabilities and provide an expanded home for the Medical Center’s Kanas Regional Heart Center.

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and all-payer data from 15 states for bariatrics and appendectomy procedures.Peconic Bay Medical Center’s achievement is part of findings released in which underscores the importance of hospital quality to both consumers and hospital executives.

According to Healthgrades, variation in hospital quality can have a significant impact on the quality of care a patient receives. From 2016 through 2018, patients treated at hospitals receiving the Joint Replacement Specialty Excellence Award have, on average, a 59.7 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
