RIVERHEAD, NY – Northwell Health Peconic Bay Medical Center announced today that it has officially received a Level III Trauma Center verification from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma. The verification makes Peconic Bay Medical Center the only certified trauma center on the North Fork. Thousands of Eastern Long Island residents have nearby access to a state-of-the-art emergency medicine facility without having to travel long distances while suffering from health crises.

Established by the ACS Committee on Trauma, the verification program is designed to promote the development of trauma centers. To meet the standards to become a verified trauma center, hospitals must show their ability to address the trauma needs of all injured patients. The Peconic Bay Medical Center’s Trauma Center has already provided emergency medical services to over 1,000 Eastern Long Island residents.

“It’s an incredible milestone to celebrate becoming a verified Level III trauma center. This achievement is a testament to the quick response of our medical team and the result of our ongoing commitment to providing our patients with the world-class medical excellence they deserve. Previously, East End residents had to travel further than anyone else in the Tri-State area for trauma care,” said Dr. Amy E. Loeb, executive director of Peconic Bay Medical Center. “This rigorous verification process validates Peconic Bay Medical Center’s commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients with immediate access to advanced life-saving capabilities.”

Ranked as the North Fork’s only Level III Trauma Center, Peconic Bay Medical Center’s life-support-certified responders, trauma-trained nurses and board-certified surgeons stand ready 24/7 to coordinate all the medical center’s resources in any emergency. The Kanas Regional Heart Center, which hosts an advanced-technology Cardiac Cath Lab, provides emergency interventional cardiac catheterization services for heart attack victims. Since 2017, the Kanas Regional Health Center has been providing life-saving services, and its range of cardiology services continues to expand. In addition, Peconic Bay Medical Center is also an award-winning NYS-designated stroke center.

The announcement comes a month after Peconic Bay Medical Center announced it has earned a four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the CMS 2021 hospital compare ratings.

Since joining in January of 2016, Northwell Health has moved rapidly to make Peconic Bay Medical Center the regional medical center for Eastern Long Island.
