Peconic Bay Medical Center receives second consecutive A rating for hospital safety from Leapfrog

RIVERHEAD, NY — Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) announced today that it has received an A rating for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group in its Fall 2023 report. PBMC was one of only seven hospitals on Long Island and the only hospital in Eastern Suffolk County to achieve this prestigious distinction. Leapfrog is the nation’s premier advocate of transparency in health care and is considered one of the most respected and widely used safety benchmarks in the health care industry. The announcement comes on the heels of PBMC receiving three Awards of Excellence along with several 5-Star rankings in a range of specialties from Healthgrades, including cardiac care, orthopedics, neurosciences, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and critical care. This is PBMC’s second consecutive “A” rating for hospital safety (from Leapfrog?).

“This ‘A’ safety rating signifies PBMC's dedication to maintaining the highest standards of safety for its patients and for communities throughout Eastern Suffolk County,” said Amy Loeb, EdD, MBA, RN, PBMC executive director. “This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to providing exceptional health care services and ensuring the safety of our patients. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who helped to make this a reality, which enhances our success as we embark on an expansion initiative to further advance health care in this region.”

Updated twice per year, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades are intended to draw attention to assist patients in making informed decisions about where to seek treatment based on how safe a hospital is for patients. To achieve an “A” safety rating, PBMC’s patient care was studied in several categories, including preventing and responding to patient harm, health care-associated infections, maternity care, medication safety, complex adult surgery, total joint replacement and care for elective outpatient surgery patients. PBMC received exemplary scores in each category.

As the eastern hub of Northwell Health and Eastern Suffolk County’s largest health care provider, PBMC provides over 250,000 Eastern Suffolk residents with the closest access to advanced cardiac catheterization suites, a New York State-designated stroke center, Level III trauma services and Eastern Suffolk County’s largest—and busiest—Emergency Department. PBMC’s expansion plans will total $92 million, with $50 million of this being raised through a campaign by the PBMC Foundation. PBMC’s expansion plans include adding 6,600 square feet to the hospital’s emergency department, modernizing the South Pavilion to increase the patient capacity and creating a new Center for Women and Infants.

“PBMC is proud to lead the charge in bringing world-class medical care options to Eastern Suffolk County,” said Amy Loeb.
