RIVERHEAD, NY— Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC), the largest hospital in eastern Suffolk County and the Eastern Hub of Northwell Health, announced today that they will be administering free influenza vaccinations for Riverhead’s Community Giving Day at the North Fork Spanish Apostolate on Thursday, November 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Vaccinations will be first come first served and completely free.

“As we know, the best way to protect against the flu is by getting vaccinated each year,” said Dr. Amy Loeb, executive director of Peconic Bay Medical Center. “This year, the flu vaccination is especially important during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We want to make sure everyone within our community has access to the flu vaccination in our ongoing efforts to keep everyone safe and healthy.”

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older. Certain populations are more vulnerable, such as people over 65, young children, those with respiratory illnesses like asthma, or other illnesses that lower your immunity. The flu vaccination is especially important this year as many Americans spent last fall and winter following COVID-19 safety protocols, resulting in a decline of influenza infections which means fewer individuals have natural immunity to the virus this year.

“Since there is an above-average number of people at risk of the flu virus this year, we feel it is so important to spend this years’ Community Giving Day making the vaccine available to any member of our community,” added Dr. Loeb.

For the safety of the community and the staff, PBMC kindly asks attendees to wear masks and practice social distancing at the event. For more information, please contact communityrelations@northwell.edu.
