RIVERHEAD, NY – Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) has officially unveiled its much-anticipated strategic plan for expanding the physical space of the hospital and advancing healthcare services available to Eastern Suffolk County. The initiative is intended to elevate the patient experience and lay the foundation for bringing advanced specialized care to Suffolk County. Along with implementing new, life-saving technology, PBMC outlined a goal to add 6,600 square feet to the emergency department, increase bed capacity, and establish a brand-new private Center for Women and Infants. The campaign to support these efforts was introduced during a celebration at the hospital led by PBMC’s Executive Director, Amy Loeb, EdD, MBA, R.N., who also announced that PBMC has already raised over $30 million of its $50 million goal to support the expansion.
“This plan is the next step in the evolution of Peconic Bay Medical Center, and we’re incredibly excited to unveil it to the community,” said Dr. Loeb. “Since joining Northwell Health in 2016, PBMC has transformed into a multi award-winning hospital complete with the Kanas Regional Heart Center, Corey Critical Care Pavilion, Level III Trauma Center and is the only hospital with an ‘A’ safety rating on the East End. All of this growth has been led by a steadfast vision of embracing our community’s health and wellness needs, and this investment in our community will lead to a higher level of specialized care in this region. We thank our generous donors for helping us to make this vision a reality, and we are excited to see it come to fruition.”
The focal point of the strategic plan is the expansion of PBMC’s emergency department, which will be renamed the Poole Family Trauma & Emergency Center in honor of a landmark $5 million contribution made by local philanthropists Thomas and Mary Jane Poole. Due to the region’s growing population and PBMC’s reputation for sophistication and advanced medical care, the demand for critical care – -strokes, heart attacks and other traumas – has grown exponentially, with PBMC seeing twice as many patients as it was initially designated to serve. The expansion will increase the emergency department’s capacity by 75 percent. In addition to increased emergency department capacity, the 6,600-square-foot expansion project will offer a dual bay trauma unit, additional cardiac response technology, comprehensive radiology capabilities and enhanced efficiency. This expansion will save lives and make high-level care more accessible to all.
The other milestone project within the strategic plan includes the modernization of the South Pavilion, which will aim to create 16-20 additional medical beds and establish a dedicated Center for Women and Infants. This facility will feature brand new private rooms and make much-needed comprehensive women’s health services accessible to residents throughout Suffolk County. It will also enable PBMC to increase its level of care for women at all stages of life, including a more advanced level of breast health, urogynecology, tele neonatology and a goal to develop a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). To support this effort, PBMC has recently sold its 2nd Street property and will reinvest the proceeds to create the newly modernized South Pavilion, which will be named after Robert Entenmann.
“With this investment, PBMC will extend access to health care for residents throughout Eastern Suffolk and further eliminate any barriers that once stood in the way,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. “PBMC is a hospital dedicated to serving the people of this great community and it has continued to adapt to stay true to that mission as our area’s population grows and our medical needs become more complex. We are excited to be on this journey and are grateful to all those who have contributed to making it possible.”
This campaign is the Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation’s largest endeavor since 2018 when it unveiled the Kanas Regional Heart Center, made possible by the John and Elaine Kanas Family Foundation, and the Corey Critical Care Pavilion named in honor of Emilie Roy and Michael Corey. In that time, PBMC has been recognized both on Long Island and within the health care industry as one of the elite hospitals in the nation. In 2023, PBMC was rated by Healthgrades as one of America’s top 100 Best for Coronary Intervention and received 5 stars for Coronary Interventional Procedures, Treatment of Heart Attack and Treatment of Stroke, among other 5-star designations and awards. U.S. News & World Report also scored PBMC as High Performing in treating heart failure and several other service lines.
“We have set a high standard for ourselves because our community deserves the best, and at each phase of the PBMC’s evolution, we’ve met the challenge with accolades from the healthcare industry,” said Dr. Loeb. “We expect this upcoming expansion to be our most substantial work yet.”
