RIVERHEAD,NEW YORK (October 31, 2022)—Peconic Bay Medical Center's (PBMC) cardiac, orthopedic, neurology and pulmonary departments have received five stars, ranked among the nation's best specialty service departments by Healthgrades. Healthgrades is one of the most trusted platforms used by patients to evaluate doctors and hospitals to help them find the right health care. Utilizing the most commonly treated conditions and procedures, Healthgrades rates 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals to determine annual rankings. These acknowledgements come on the heels of PBMC being rated one of the best robotic surgery centers in the country by the Surgical Review Corporation, and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Michael Ciminiello and Dr. Peter Sultan being ranked two of the top orthopedic surgeons in the state by Dexur.
“These five-star rankings are a testament to the investments we have made to our hospital, elevating healthcare for Suffolk County residents,” said Peconic Bay Medical Center Executive Director Amy Loeb, EdD, MBA, RN. “With planned upgrades being made to our facilities and new, talented doctors joining our staff, we are excited to build upon these accomplishments in the future. Our mission is to save lives and provide exceptional healthcare services to our neighbors throughout Suffolk County. I am proud of our team and the recognition for their efforts supporting that mission.”
Among the awards that Peconic Bay Medical Center received, the Kanas Regional Heart Center, Eastern Suffolk County’s premier destination for cardiac care, was named a five-star recipient for treatment of heart attacks heading into 2023 and coronary intervention procedures for 2022-2023. The heart center was also positioned among the top 5 percent nationwide for coronary intervention and the top 10 percent in all of cardiology. In addition, this is the third time in a row that PBMC’s orthopedics team received five-star recognition in hip fracture treatment. This is also the second year in a row for the PBMC neurology team to receive a five-star award from Healthgrades, which also distinguished PBMC from others in the region for its work as a Level III Trauma Center and a New York State-designated stroke center. PBMC's pulmonologists have received a five-star rating for their treatment of pneumonia for the second consecutive year as well.
Healthgrades rankings are determined by analyzing over 45 million Medicare patient claims over three years. Healthgrades monitors hospital visits to see if a visit resulted in complications or mortality up to 30 days after a patient was admitted. Using this data, Healthgrades then develops a list of potential risks based on the patient's conditions and their hospital visit to create a model for expected outcomes for other patients with the same conditions, procedures and potential risks. From there, hospitals are awarded a star rating. Each ranked department is granted 1-5 stars, with one being outcomes worse than expected, three being outcomes as expected, and five being outcomes better than expected. Only 15 percent of rankings fall in the five-star category. PBMC received five
5-star rewards for its care.
