RIVERHEAD, NY – Northwell Health Peconic Bay Medical Center staff recently recognized paramedics from the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for outstanding medical care during a meeting on Thursday, August 5.

Clinical Program Manager for the Stroke program Donna Lyburt, MSN, RN, and Paramedic Supervisor Jason Gross acknowledged paramedic Jeffrey Matheson, EMT/driver Matthew Dinson and volunteer Elmahdi Issam with certificates of recognition for their team approach and sharp assessment skills that expedited a patient’s medical careduring a blizzard in February.

“Time is critical and it’s like a race,” Lyburt said of stroke patients. “Every minute from the time the call is dispatched to the time you arrive at the hospital is crucial. We appreciate the partnership of the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and all they do for the community,” she said.

During Thursday’s meeting, Lyburt explained how important it is that the EMTs pre-notified the hospital of a possible stroke patient, which allowed the team to jump into action. The patient, a woman in her 60’s, was provided critical care, stabilized and transferred for a higher level of care within 67 minutes.
